GENIUS CHILD

This is a song for the genius child.

Sing it softly, for the song is wild.

Sing it softly as ever you can -

Lest the song get out of hand.

Nobody loves a genius child
.

Can you love an eagle,

Tame or wild?
Can you love an eagle,

Wild or tame?

Can you love a monster

Of frightening name?

Nobody loves a genius child.

Kill him - and let his soul run wild.

ART BASEL IN PHOTOS

Miami was great this year, already looking forward to the next Art Basel. Met so many lovely people down there and the weather was nice enough to spend a couple hours a day on the beach. A few of my favorites from the Art Basel fair are included as well as some random Space Invader up in the city. The blue car was a random spot in Wynwood that reminded me of a scene out of Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle. Here's a brief recap in photos:

4 Sale--A Collaborative Show Curated by Anne Huntington--Opening Reception Wed. November 17, 6-8 PM

4 Sale
Collaboration between Aneta Bartos, Elle Muliarchyk, Yana Toyber, Martynka Wawrzyniak

Curated by Anne Huntington

Viewing: 19 – 22 November, 11am – 6pm

Location: 8 Bond Street, New York

Reception: 17 November 6 to 8pm

RSVP: info@amhindustries.com

PRESS RELEASE:

New York – November 2010, 4 Sale debuts the culmination of the year
long creative union between Aneta Bartos, Elle Muliarchyk, Yana
Toyber and Martynka Wawrzyniak. The imagery delves into universal
mores and ideals all the while producing beautiful, conceptually strong
and visually stimulating works. 4 Sale captures the essence of the
dynamic nature within this collaboration curated by Anne Huntington.

The works appropriate, suggest and formalize the collaboration within
the full photographic body. Each artist conceptualizes unique realities
within her framed vignettes, thus illustrating how each artist proclaims
her unique voice, idea and story. The process evolves through
openness, risk-taking, exploration and the incorporation of artistic and
cultural influences. The fundamental nature of the works materializes
organic and potentially controversial issues; issues that the artists
keenly acknowledge and own. This acute awareness underscores the
complexity of the project that liberates, provokes and creates a sense of
union between these four talented artists of Eastern European descent.

4 Sale presents a collection of works from the collaboration. The
physicality, sexuality and sensuality inform and deliver a pure
perspective free from taboos, victimization, male-dominance,
exploitation, and full of identity, feminism, and self-representation.
Highlights have been featured in W Magazine’s Art Issue, November
2010.

Joshua Liner Gallery presents Tiffany Bozic "Confiding to Strangers" Opening Reception THURS, NOV 11th 6-9 PM

Joshua Liner Press Release:

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Confiding to Strangers, an exhibition of new paintings by the San Francisco-based artist Tiffany Bozic. This is Bozic’s debut solo show at Joshua Liner Gallery. Spanning the gallery’s two exhibition areas, Confiding to Strangers features thirteen medium-sized works in acrylic on maple-wood panel and eighteen watercolor-on-paper works. All showcase Bozic’s meticulous, realist rendering of plant and animal subjects that recasts nature as fable. “Each painting is about the intimate struggles we share with other living creatures,” says Bozic. “I use examples from nature to help me describe these increasingly complex emotions, expanding my own metaphorical language. These works are small reminders that we are nature; connected to everything.”

Some of these intimate connections express harmony in existence, such as the pair of sugar gliders spooning in a nest of dogwood blossoms depicted in Oxytocin (a witty reference to the “cuddle hormone” of breast feeding and maternal bonding). Other works suggest life’s inherent competition, such as Eat or Be Eaten, a tangle of frogs and bats consuming each other amid a bright bouquet of irises and gerberas. Still other works are more explicitly metaphorical though no less immediate, such as the mysterious Under My Skin, showing a welter of desert animals (armadillos, beetles, thorny devils) submerged below a landscape of parched earth, one lone dandelion pushing through like a hair from a follicle.

Self-taught, Bozic and her wide array of subjects are inspired by the artist’s extensive travels to wild places, as well as her study of research specimens at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. In her practice, Bozic has developed a complex process of masking and staining the maple panels she paints on, thus collaborating with the wood’s natural grain as she builds up compositions with thin layers of acrylic. Her work has the traditional air of Flemish still-life painting or tightly rendered illustrations, displaying a highly emotional range of fabulist themes.

The show runs from November 11th- December 11th.

Joshua Liner Gallery is located at:

548 West 28th Street
3rd Floor
New York, NY 10001

Gallery Hours:
Tues-Saturday
11am-6pm

Mighty Tanaka presents "Elegant Discord" OPENING RECEPTION FRI. NOV. 12th 6-9 PM

Mighty Tanaka presents:
Elegant Discord

Featuring the works of Peter Halasz, Adam Miller, Bruno Perillo & Fedele Spadafora

MIGHTY TANAKA PRESS RELEASE:

As the tides of change sweep across the world and the traditional balances of power start to shift, the surge of conflict rattles across the land.  The effects of this turbulent wave are strong and the outcome leaves people disjointed and searching for meaning.  Mighty Tanaka is proud to bring you our next installment entitled Elegant Discord, which features the artwork of Peter Halasz, Adam Miller, Bruno Perillo & Fedele Spadafora.  These four highly talented neo-realist artists explore the evolving struggle of the human condition.

Elegant Discord contains powerful imagery that spans from isolation to nostalgia, as the work deals with the pressures of war and the mental aftermath incurred.  The figurative paintings and ghostly vistas juxtapose the beautiful with the sinister, creating an in-depth view of the current state of the world.

Removing the veil of both brutality and madness, Elegant Discord explores the varied perceptions of divergence and the embodiment of its many viewpoints.  Through both oil paintings and graphite sketches, the artwork symbolizes the raw emotion, uncertainty and execution of the changing dynamics of the world.

OPENING RECEPTION:

Found Sharkbite.

Preoccupied on my phone whilst sipping coffee at "What's this place called again?" Mr. Grazi could not have spotted a more appropriate find in the Post. Sharkbite your mama's booty. That tear in the upper right hand corner (yes, the one that looks like a sharkbite) was already there. KISMET!

The Shadow Machine---Jason Eppink

From the Gothamist:

[It's suspected that the abandoned station housing the Underbelly works (the entrance has been removed) is at S 4th in Williamsburg; Second Avenue Sagas says the proposed six-track station there is less an abandoned station and more an "abandoned dream." And, for a little taste of what it's like heading down to the space, here's Underbelly contributor Jason Eppink's video of his projection collaboration with I Am. Eppinksays, "I had to make a video because, as a hand-made analog projection system, it's a little difficult to photograph!"]

FAILE: "Bedtime Stories" @ PERRY RUBENSTEIN GALLERY:OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4th

Brooklyn-based artist collective Faile will be exhibiting at Perry Rubenstein Gallery for their next show "Bedtime Stories." Like many of my other favorite artists, these guys have their roots in the street art scene. Just because they are showing in Chelsea does not mean they've left their roots behind and only show on the white walls of galleries near the Hudson--the collective is part of the Underbelly Project; a project as underground, gritty and exclusive as street art gets. Can't no one see it, can't no one buy it.

THE UNDERBELLY PROJECT

Photo and video stills borrowed from the NY TIMES

The Underbelly Project, which has been underway since 2009, finally released some images and its story to the New York Times yesterday on Halloween. The idea is brilliant and wish I were able to make the trek down there to experience it for myself.

There are 103 street artists participating in this project and untraditional super swag art exhibition that has been 18 months in the making.

From Jasper Ree's NY TIMES article: "Known to its creators and participating artists as the Underbelly Project, the space, where all the show’s artworks remain, defies every norm of the gallery scene. Collectors can’t buy the art. The public can’t see it. And the only people with a chance of stumbling across it are the urban explorers who prowl the city’s hidden infrastructure or employees of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority."
